Boulder County prepares homes for a sustainable future

Boulder County prepares homes for a sustainable future

Electric vehicles in the US have just found plenty of potentially new homes in Boulder County, Colorado. This jurisdiction in the northern part of the state recently adopted the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code, requiring all new homes to come pre-wired for electric vehicles.

Any garage built for a new house, duplex or townhouse will now have to include a 240-volt electric vehicle charging unit or the wiring/conduit required to install the unit at a later date. Such pre-wiring will save the average homeowner $1,000 compared with the cost of retrofitting an outlet, thus making sustainable mobility an even more attractive option.

China increases EV incentives

China increases EV incentives

China’s love affair with the car began only recently, but the passion is all enveloping. China is now the world’s biggest market for new cars with some 18 million sold in 2012. That’s around 3.5 million more than the USA.

But this huge explosion in car ownership has meant an equally rapid rise in airborne pollution. To counter this, the Chinese authorities are promoting the benefits of zero emission mobility by increasing incentives available to buyers of electric vehicles.

This week, Nissan will ramp up U.S. assembly of the 2013 model year all-electric LEAF at its manufacturing plant in Smyrna, Tenn., where it will be manufactured alongside the company’s gasoline-powered products.

The start of Nissan LEAF assembly in Smyrna comes on the heels of the opening of Nissan’s battery plant in an adjacent facility. Nissan is the only automaker that manufactures its own electric vehicle batteries, at the largest lithium-ion automotive battery plant in the U.S.
